Fire protection of timber structures: Fibrofeu®
Fibrofeu®, manufactured and marketed by Projiso, is a fibrous spray-on mixture used for fire protection of timber structures. Fibrofeu® consists of slag wool, with hydraulic and inorganic binders. It is supplied in the form of light flocons.
Fibrofeu® is applied by spraying, a technique also known as flocking, which consists in pressurised spraying of Fibrofeu® fibres onto a substrate using special machines.
The sprayed thickness will be defined according to the desired fire insulation rating.
The spraying machine generally comprises a feed hopper, a carding device, a blowing device (fan, turbine or blower), a hose for conveying the mixture to be sprayed. A spray gun and water.
The product is carded in a machine and then fed through a hose to a spray gun using compressed air. Water-fed nozzles are placed around the hose outlet to wet the product before it is sprayed onto the substrate.
The fire resistance of timber supports and structures is achieved by limiting the temperature rise of the timber.
The fire protection of timber cannot be applied directly to the timber and must be accompanied by the installation of an expanded metal sheet.
The protection consists of sheets of wire mesh or equivalent laid perpendicular to the beams (sheets are laid side by side with an overlap of 100 mm), followed by spray-application of Fibrofeu®.
Beam spacing must be less than or equal to 600 mm; beam height must be greater than or equal to 220 mm with a minimum width of 100mm and a plank thickness greater than or equal to 23mm.
